Couples, roommates and friends will face off tonight to see how well they know each other.
Carly Bauknecht, an East Lansing senior, came up with the idea of a competition based off of "The Newlywed Game," which ran on ABC from 1966 to 1974.
"It's similar to the TV show, but it's also quite different. The questions are geared more towards roommates and friends," Bauknecht said.
The event, titled "Who Knows Who Best," will take place at 8 p.m. today at O'Kelly's Sports Bar and Grill, 2000 S. Mission St.
The competition is free to watch, but audience members are encouraged to participate by donating $1 to answer a question with the person they are sitting with between rounds.
More than 20 prizes will be raffled off. The prizes include gift certificates for Meijer, O'Kelly's and B-Tan as well as a new pair of skis, sunglasses and gift baskets.
Five recreation, parks and leisure services students organized the fundraiser as a class project for RPL 430: Recreation Programming. Each semester, students who take the class are required to come up with a fundraiser.
Ten teams will compete against each other while raising money for Women's Aid Service, Inc. of Mount Pleasant.
"It's (an organization) that hasn't been picked by the class before," said Bonnie Lust, a Goodrich junior and group member. "We thought it would be nice to give them all of our donations."
Each team will be seated at a booth, with a divider running down the middle of the table so team members cannot see each other and their answers.
For each question, one member of the team will write down their answer based on how they feel their partner would respond. Once they are finished writing, the second member of each team will answer the question.
There will be three rounds and one team declared winner at the end of the night.
To help keep track of which teams are in the lead, one of the big screen televisions will have a scoreboard which will be updated as the game goes along.
"The team who wins first place will get gift certificates to The Brass, concert tickets for Lifehouse and other small items," Lust said.
The Lifehouse tickets are for the sold out concert scheduled to take place March 21 at Clutch Cargo in Pontiac.
Commerce Township senior Lauren Booms will compete along with her best friend, Rockford junior Lauren Hall. Booms said the duo is giving each other quizzes with the types of questions they think they will be asked.
Booms heard about the event through her co-worker, Bauknecht, and decided to sign up.
"I think Lauren and I will be good at it. It won't be boring," Booms said.
