Students seek brand name food

The verdict is in on what students want in the planned renovation of Bovee University Center.
And the survey says - more brand name dining options and longer food service hours are needed in the UC.
Project Manager John Latoski said responses from student, staff and faculty asked for the food-related requests in the 18-question survey distributed in February.
SHW Group, a contracting company from Berkley, has been hired to begin the renovations, which should take place in 2010.
Latoski said SHW Group was not surprised by the survey findings. He said the group thought the results were comparable to similar projects at other university campuses. The survey input will give the project team a starting point, Latoski said.
"It will provide a framework of idea to work within when defining a scope of work for this project," Latoski said. "The project team plans to share a summary of the survey results during an upcoming forum."
The Bovee University Center provides students with a bookstore, offices, conference rooms and dining options but not everyone is content with the current state of the facility.
The Board of Trustees approved a $5 million UC renovation fund in April and steps are being made to find out what that money should go toward.
The forum is set for mid-April.
The survey included such questions as, "Where do you typically eat during the afternoon?" and "On campus, where do you typically go to meet friends or hang out?"
Troy sophomore Emily Krause said she loves to eat in the Down Under Food Court.
"It would be so sad if they changed the food court," Krause said.
She does not think everything should stay the same, however. Krause said the UC should be more welcoming.
"You walk through it now and it's dark with a lot of offices," she said. "They should make it prettier."
Peck freshman Stephanie Fetting said she would consider studying in the UC if renovations allowed for more space.
"Everyone just walks through it now," Fetting said. "I know I couldn't get any homework done if I tried, but with a designated space, I would go there to study."
