The softball team went 4-8 during its spring break trip to Florida.

CMU finished its trip Sunday with a win, beating Villanova after losing its first four games in the University of South Florida Under Armour Invitational.

The Chippewas only scored three runs in the losing streak.

"The way coach said it is we were all in a slump together and we are all going to get out of it together," said junior pitcher Ali Pettit. "We are working on moving up and moving onward."

Central (7-9) lost 3-0 to Purdue and 5-0 to Tennessee-Chatanooga on Saturday, and 3-1 to Long Island on Friday.

"We had our struggles," said sophomore outfielder Christina Novak. "We didn't score when we needed to and we didn't play the defense we needed to, so we had our fair share of losses, but it's better to lose at the beginning of the season and get ready for the (Mid-American Conference) and win those games."

CMU began the USF tournament Thursday with an 8-2 loss to Missouri. A two-run home run by Novak in the top of the first jump-started the team against the Tigers. But Missouri followed Novak's home run with five hits of its own against Pettit in the first inning, which gave Missouri an early 3-2 lead.

"In that situation you just need to stop the bleeding," Pettit said. "We just needed to get out of it faster than we did."

The Chippewas earned a pair of wins on March 4 against Maine, 7-5 and 4-1, in Clearwater, Fla.

CMU also went 1-4 in the Miken Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.

On March 2, centerfielder Tracy Kaatz helped CMU avenge its earlier loss to Tennessee State with four hits and two RBIs. in Central's 10-1 win.

The Chippewas had triples from Novak and senior outfield Suzie Giroux, but lost 3-1 to Tennessee State on March 1. Later that day, Central only managed four hits in a 3-0 loss to Florida Atlantic.

The Chippewas lost 7-3 to Illinois and 7-3 to Rutgers on Feb. 29.

Illinois used home runs to beat CMU in game one of the tournament against the nation's top home run hitting team from last season.

Illinois pitcher Claire DeVreese held the Chippewas to just two hits in her seven innings, while UI's Shanna Diller and Angelena Mexicano both hit two-run home runs.

"We haven't played with passion and intensity and that's what makes the game fun," Pettit said.
