Minority Students Services Director Traci Guinn is looking for a new assistant director to help her run programs and assist with her office.

The position has been empty since March 2007 when Ann Kwak left Central Michigan University to pursue a job in Florida. Danielle Tate served as interim assistant director from March 2007 until she left in January, for a position in Indianapolis.

Sean Novak has been interim assistant director since Tate left.

Guinn said having staff leave at that time puts her in a difficult situation.

"Because it was done during the school year, we filled the position with a graduate assistant," she said.

Novak was a graduate assistant before accepting the interim position.

The position recently has become advertised because Guinn and Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity Denise Green found the need to rewrite the job description. With all the additional programs Minority Student Services has started, the previous job description was outdated, Guinn said.

"It has been open - we're just starting to advertise it now," she said.

Guinn also considered the timing of the job filling.

Since it is harder to fill positions during the school year, starting the process now will allow applicants to contact their current employers and begin the transition to move to Mount Pleasant if needed.

Guinn said she is looking for someone who fits well with the MSS staff and can assist with several programs, including the Multicultural Advancement Scholarship program.

The hiring process will begin with the review of applications that are turned in via Minority Student Service's Web site.

"There's a committee that will be interviewing for that," said Jeanette Smith, administrative secretary for Minority Student Services.

After the committee interviews the candidates by telephone, they will be brought to campus to complete an on-campus interview.

Guinn said she was not sure whether the candidates would be on campus before the semester ended so open forums could be held for students.

"It's possible forums will still take place," she said. "I need someone to be able to jump in."

Guinn said she is looking to fill the position by July 1.
