Correction: The 'Hoops for Heroes' Tournament will take place from noon to 4 p.m. The wrong time appeared in the original story.
Students will have a chance to play basketball and benefit children of fallen soldiers this weekend.
A student group from RPL 430: Recreation Programming will host "Hoops for Heroes" from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in Rose 125 and 126. The event is a three-on-three basketball tournament where donations will be made to the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund.
The tournament will host four-person teams, with one player being a substitute. It is $25 to register ahead of time and $30 at the door.
Charlotte junior Chris Hewitt and Mount Pleasant sophomore Jenael Ignat are among five group members putting the event together.
"What we do is plan an event and give the money to charity," Hewitt said.
The event is $1 to attend and there will be a live DJ, popcorn and raffles to win hotel visits and Detroit Red Wings tickets.
The group had little trouble coming up with the idea.
"One of my residents threw it out there as a joke and we kind of ran with it," said Ignat, a Robinson Hall resident assistant.
Once the idea was in place, it was only a matter of planning and getting a good charity involved, Ignat said.
"It hits everyone at home, and we all know somebody who has been or is in war," Ignat said of the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund.
Though there only is one team currently signed up, Hewitt said, he hopes more will sign up beforehand and on the day of the event.
Hewitt and Ignat said they might do the event again depending on how Saturday goes.
"If it doesn't do very well, I'll know how to market it better next time," Ignat said.
Anyone of any skill level is encouraged to play or even just to watch. The group needs more teams and encourages those with any interest to check out the Facebook group called "Hoops for Heroes."
