A day after making 12 shots from behind the arc in its 83-71 win against Northern Illinois, CMU did not hit a single 3-pointer after the six-shot stretch and finished 6-of-24.
"We came with a fire; we just couldn't sustain it," Zeigler said. "Once we stopped making our shots our ability to defend started to wane."
CMU led by five in the first half, but Akron came back with a 7-0 run and went up 32-27 with a few minutes remaining. Linhart hit a fade-away in the final seconds to maintain Akron's five-point lead and made the score 34-29 going into the break.
The Chippewas shot only 36.7 percent in the first half and were outscored 24-8 in the paint.
In the second half, Akron went on a 9-2 run in the first four minutes and pushed its lead to 10. The lead hovered around 10 for most of the second half until the Zips went on their 9-1 run that put the game away.
"We just couldn't get anything to fuel us to maybe be able to dig down a little more and get some stops and cut into that lead," Zeigler said.
Junior forward Chris Kellermann led CMU with 14 points and nine rebounds. Watson finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
CMU (14-17) shot only 34.5 percent on the game, while Akron (22-9) shot 56 percent.
No. 3 Akron advances to play No. 2 Western Michigan in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Quicken Loans Arena.
