As crunch time approaches for students and faculty with seven weeks left in the semester, Minority Student Services still is planning and putting on programs.
Asian Heritage Month is one of those events the staff of MSS is still busy working on.
"We really won't get a chance to breathe," said Shawn Wilson, assistant director for Minority Student Services.
The Asian Heritage Month kick off celebration will start at 1 p.m. today in front of the Bovee University Center. Information and other items will be given away to students.
The annual Iron Chef Competition will take place at 5 p.m. March 26 in the UC Rotunda Room. Defending champion and Towers' Residence Hall Adviser Bill O'Dell will serve as the Iron Chef at the event, which is based on the television show of the same name.
"It attracts a large crowd," Wilson said.
Nou Her, an Auburn sophomore and Asian Cultural Organization secretary, said Asian Heritage Month is a time for students of Asian descent to step out and be proud to show their history.
"It's our time to shine," she said. "When I was in high school, it was like 'This is our time.'"
The Asian Cultural Organization also has several events planned for the month's festivities. One is called "Sushi and Substance: Asian in America," on April 2, which will discuss the differences in Asian and American cultures.
"Fear Factor," a program based on the television show, also will take place April 2. Several types of Asian food will be available to students who would like to try food that may not smell like that which they would enjoy.
"We just get a variety of food that smells gross," Her said.
The celebration will wrap up at 7 p.m. April 21 in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium. Derald Wing Sue, a professor of psychology and education at Columbia University, will share his views on diversity and multicultural education.
Wilson said Sue spoke on a panel a few months ago at CMU.
"They really liked what he had to say," he said. "People really wanted him to expand on his topics. He got such high praise (we decided) to bring him back."
