Saturday celebrations of St. Patrick's Day may be over, but area law enforcement officials still remain concerned about the ones that could take place today.

The Roman Catholic Church changed St. Patrick's Day - usually on March 17 - to March 15 this year to avoid interference with Holy Week.

"Typically the most problems occur on St. Patrick's Day," said CMU Chief of Police Stan Dinius. "We will be participating in party patrol along with the Mount Pleasant Police Department and the Isabella County Sheriff's Department."

Six extra deputy cars are expected to patrol the Mount Pleasant area until about 4 a.m. Tuesday, said Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski.

As of Sunday afternoon, the Mount Pleasant Police Department reported issuing three Operating While Intoxicated tickets throughout the weekend. CMU Police didn't issue any tickets, but said there were reports of damage to car mirrors.

"I'm really happy that the numbers this weekend were low," Mioduszewski said. "That means more people were drinking responsibly and had designated drivers."

Students who were out Saturday noticed the police presence.

Grand Blanc freshman Josh Roosen said police did a sufficient job and that extra patrolling is not needed today.

"I was driving down Bluegrass (Road) and there were a lot of people pulled over and cops were everywhere," Roosen said. "I think that they had enough people out patrolling (Saturday)."

Local bars had large turnouts on Saturday, but also did not have any incidents occur.

"Business was steady all day and there weren't any problems," said Chad Miller, a bartender at The Cabin, 930 W. Broomfield Road.

Some bars have added specialty items to their menus today in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day.

"We're going to be serving green beer, Irish stew, and corned beef and cabbage in addition to what we normally sell," said an employee at The Green Spot Pub, 808 N. Mission St.

Businesses are expecting it to be busier than what it was on Saturday.

"A few customers have asked if we were doing anything to celebrate St. Patrick's Day - they didn't know it had been changed," Miller said. "I think we will be busier than normal."
