Miami women win tourney
Issue date: 3/17/08 Section: Sports
Miami beat Ohio 67-65 Saturday in Cleveland to become the first team besides Bowling Green to win the Mid-American Conference Championship since 2004, when Eastern Michigan won. It was Miami's first championship since 1982.
Miami won the tournament by beating No. 3 seed Western Michigan in the quarterfinals 65-60, No. 5 seed Toledo 70-66 and then Ohio.
Bobcat forward Lauren Hmiel and guards Lauren Kohn and Jennifer Poff led Ohio. Hmiel finished with 12 points while Kohn and Poff both had 10. Both teams shot under 40 percent for the game.
With the win, the Redhawks head to their first NCAA tournament and will find out at 7 p.m. today which team it plays in the first round when the tournament starts next week.
"We were hungier," MU guard Amanda Jackson told the Associated Press Saturday. "We wanted it more, and that's what gave us the edge."
