Student demand for jobs in human services has prompted CMU to plan its first ever Social and Human Services Career Event.

The job fair will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. today in Finch Fieldhouse. The event will cater to many career choices, including majors in child development, communications, sociology, psychology and women's studies.

"There is a lot of interest among CMU students in the human service areas," said Jeff Hyames, assistant director of career development and the event's main organizer.

The event will feature 28 employers, including the Michigan Department of Human Services, Mid-Michigan Community Action Agency, American Red Cross-Central Michigan Chapter and Big Brothers, Big Sisters in the Heart of Michigan.

Students will have a chance to apply for everything from volunteering and internships to full-time employment, Hyames said. The likelihood of on-the-spot hiring is low, but the event is good for networking.

"It's like the first step in the interview process," Hyames said.

Many of the employers are looking forward to the chance to recruit at CMU.

"A big thank you to CMU for putting on these types of events - we're glad to be involved," said Kimberly Johnson from the Mount Pleasant Housing Commission, which is looking to add a few new interns and employees.

CMU Career Services began planning the event last summer. It is the first time Career Services has hosted the event, but plans are to make it annual if it is successful.

The fair is the second job fair Career Services has sponsored this semester. Three more job fairs are planned for the semester - the College of Health Professions Career Day on March 26, the Science and Technology Career Event on April 2 and the CMU Teacher Fair on April 15.

Some students already are getting excited for the event.

"I think it's a very good idea," said Auburn freshman Kyra Ziehmer, who is considering a major in human services.
