Washington Street's pothole problem won't be completely fixed until many students leave campus.

As soon as the Central Michigan University semester ends in May, the street will be ripped up for repavement. It is the road's first repaving in more than 20 years.

The project will fix the stretch of road from Preston to Bellows in the area of Ronan Hall and Wightman Hall as well as the North Quad residence halls.

"It (potholes) can really hurt the suspension," said John Weinert, Warren sophomore who lives in Robinson Hall.

The Mount Pleasant Department of Public Works Streets Department is overseeing the $600,000 project. It is part of $2.1 million the department is spending on improvements for the city's streets, sidewalks, sewers and water mains. The decision to repave Washington St. was made based on the road's poor condition.

The job will be what is known as a "complete reconstruct."

First, the current road will be entirely ripped out. The sewer system of the area will be repaired in specific places.

Next, the new road will be put in. It will have reconstructed curbs, gutters and a new asphalt surface.

"It will be nice when completed," said Robert Murphy, Mount Pleasant's street superintendent.

The repaving is scheduled to start May 6 and be completed Aug. 8.

While the construction may cause some issues for students during the summer, the work should be completed before the start of the fall semester.

Students seemed in agreement with the city that the road could use a repaving.

"I think it's hard to drive on," said Emily Krause, Troy sophomore who lives in Larzelere Hall.
