Toledo fires Joplin as head coach
Issue date: 3/19/08 Section: Sports
TOLEDO, Ohio - University of Toledo men's basketball coach Stan Joplin was fired Monday after 12 years.
A year ago, Joplin was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, but his Rockets finished this season 11-19 and UT athletic director Mike O'Brien called the last recruiting class a disappointment.
O'Brien said the program needs new direction and energy and that the coach was surprised when he got the news Sunday.
O'Brien says the university is looking for a replacement who can excite the community and bring back season ticket holders.
Joplin had a 203-155 record at Toledo. He signed a three-year extension in 2006 that was to have taken him through next season.
Joplin's association with UT basketball spans 22 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach. During his playing career (1975-79), he helped UT post an 82-27 win-loss mark and co-captained the 1978-79 team that won the MAC championship.
Toledo beat CMU twice this season, 72-61 on Jan. 16 in Toledo and 90-83 in overtime at Rose Arena on March 9.
