CMU raids Stossel Speech
Issue date: 3/19/08 Section: Voices
I was incredibly disappointed to read in Monday's paper that CMU is trying to crash John Stossel's lecture tonight by scheduling a Speak Up, Speak Out forum.
CMU has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on liberal speakers in recent years without giving a dime towards a conservative speaker. So what happens when the Campus Conservatives raise enough money for a big-name speaker like Stossel? A liberal event with the usual suspects is organized on the same day and time as the conservative event.
Stossel is an outstanding speaker who brings a perspective to campus.
It's not everyday someone of his caliber comes to Mount Pleasant, so it was unfortunate when administrators and faculty decided to compete with a student event.
If CMU really cares about diversity, they'll postpone the SUSO forum and allow students the chance to hear Stossel speaks at 7 p.m. in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium.

It's about time someone hosted a right of center speaker on campus. I guess CMU doesn't believe in having a diversity of opinions on campus. Heavens forbid students are allowed to exchange ideas and use critical thinking to question the liberalism that serves as indoctrination in the classrooms on a daily basis. (Continued…)

Ok, when is CM-life going to stop giving this idiot a platform? I'm so sick of reading about him or opinions from him. Does this guy ever go to class? Does he have friends at CM-Life that are writing about him every time he opens his mouth and issues another fascist-lite opinion?
And furthermore, hate to break up a good conspiracy theory, Denny, but all the Speak Up Speak Out events are scheduled at the beginning of the semester. (Continued…)

When a leftie is brought to campus, virtually all professors require their kids to attend or give them an incredibly high amount of extra credit that they can't refuse it. (Continued…)

Perhaps things have changed since my days at good old CMU, but when I was there, the professors never talked about any events remotely conservative. The school claimed some of the events had conservatives or Republicans (for the idiots out there, Republican doesn't equate conservative), but the lone rightie was always outnumbered by two or three liberals on the panel. I find it funny that I could tell that Dennis Lennox had written this Our Reader's Voice segment before I even saw the sign off at the end. This I knew simply through the "usual suspects" phrase that I familiarize with him. (Continued…)

Why is CMU holding a forum on the '08 race so far in advance? It's obvious they didn't want to promote Stossel. I have a political science class with Cherie Strachan, the moderator of Speak Up Speak Out, and she refused to give us credit for John Stossel, but more or less forced us into attending her forum. Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn't a Speak Up/Speak Out event one in which students of ALL political idology are encouraged to voice their opinions? Why is that automatically considered to be a liberal event?
Besides, I would much rather learn more about my fellow students' values and opinions than listen to a speech with little room for debate. (Continued…)
