The Crocs Next Step Campus Tour featuring One Republic and Fabolous has been moved to a new venue - Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

The 30,199-person capacity stadium has never been a concert venue. The event's co-sponsors, On the Fly Productions and Program Board, made the final decision earlier this week.

"We moved it because we've been trying to do a stadium show for the past three years," said Kyle VanDeventer, a Saginaw senior and Program Board president. "We're not putting a cap on tickets, we're just letting anybody come. We could have a 15,000-person concert for all we know."

The event is scheduled at 7 p.m. April 25, and tickets remain $5 for students, staff and faculty members, and $10 for the public.

VanDeventer said their contract mandates an outside concert, so the organizers were hoping for either Rose Ponds or Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

"We thought it was either Rose Ponds or the football stadium," he said. "We thought the football stadium was not as good of a chance, so when we got it was out of nowhere."

Cristina D'Aristotile, OTF public relations chair, said having the concert in the stadium makes regulation easier.

"Rose Pond is an open space and hard to monitor," she said. "We assume it's going to be such a big event, so we figure it's going to be a better venue to hold a large amount of people."

VanDeventer said every concert in athletic facilities must be approved by the athletic department.

"The athletic department said it was OK," he said. "We just have to cover the field, so we don't damage anything."

VanDeventer said this is his last concert to program as president, so he is excited about the venue.

Tickets for the event are on sale.

"We've already sold 200 to 300 tickets," D'Aristotile said.

Mount Pleasant junior Ian Boley said he enjoys outdoor concerts and thinks a Kelly/Shorts concert is a good idea.

"It's a different experience, a different energy," he said. "There's something about the combination of fresh air and music."

VanDeventer said Ford, XBOX, Spin Magazine and Crocs are sponsoring the event. Ford will raffle off a truck, Crocs will be giving away shoes and XBOX and Major League Baseball video games will be available to play, he said.

"It's going to be pretty big," he said.

This is something that is long overdue. How about another Rock against Racism concert in the stadium or a Mt. Pleasant Blues and Jazz concert of a Rock N Reggae in the stadium. (Continued…)

I like the idea but Fabolous isn't as big as Ludacris use to be. I just don't see them selling more than 5,000 tickets.
