Upper weights advance to quarters in NCAA tourney

ST. LOUIS - It was an up and down day for the wrestling team at the NCAA Championships on Thursday in St. Louis. Coach Tom Borrelli's team rolled through the first session of the day, going 11-0. The morning's momentum was lost early in the evening after Luke Smith (125 pounds), Conor Beebe (133), Brandon Carter (149), Steve Brown (157) and Trevor Stewart (165) all lost their evening matches.

Seniors will wrestle for chance at finals tonight

ST. LOUIS - Seniors Christian Sinnott and Wynn Michalak will wrestle tonight for a chance to advance to the finals of the NCAA Championships. Sinnott beat Rider's Doug Umbehauer in the semifinals at 184 pounds, while Michalak beat Missouri's Max Askren at 197 pounds.

Junior Steve Teno did not want to wait any longer for his first career Mid-American Conference victory. The junior college transfer pitched his second complete game of the season and led the Chippewas to 7-2 victory over Ohio (8-9, 2-1 MAC) at Theunissen Stadium Monday.

Steve Jaksa had some thinking to do as he prepared for the 2008 season. When the 2007 season ended in June, the baseball coach was left without the team's all-time leader in career home runs in Bryan Mitzel. The Chippewas also are without first baseman Ben Humphrey, who graduated and is playing A-ball in the Tampa Bay Rays' organization.

The baseball team scored at least one run in every inning but the eighth during its home opener Thursday to beat Wayne State 14-8. Central was aided by 15 hits and solid defensive play in its win at Theunissen Stadium. "Just glad we got the W," said coach Steve Jaksa.

Bad weather forces delay, less judges for nonconference matchup

This was not a typical rivalry gymnastics meet. Not only did today's meet against Western Michigan not count in the Mid-American Conference standings, but to top it off, there were only three judges to score the competition. Two of the judges scheduled for the meet reside on the east coast, and heavy snow caused their connecting flight from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport to be canceled.

For the first time in three seasons, the baseball team lost its Mid-American Conference opener in a 13-2 loss to Ohio on Saturday in Theunnisen Stadium. Trailing 4-0 for most of the game, the Chippewas added two in the seventh inning to put themselves within two.

The bases were loaded with just one out as the baseball team seemed primed for a comeback with senior designated hitter Jeff Nowaczyk headed to the plate. With the Chippewas trailing 5-4 Sunday against Ohio, Nowaczyk hit a hard shot, but right at Ohio second baseman Kevin Keen, who caught the ball and then beat a diving junior third baseman James Teas to second base to get the double play, ending the rally and the game.

The baseball team came into Thursday's game averaging just 3.2 runs a game in its last five games. On Thursday, 11 CMU players had hits and eight had runs batted in en route to a 14-8 victory against Wayne State at Theunissen Stadium. "Run production is just key to a team win and that was a team win," said junior outfielder Cody Allen.

Tyler Stovall watched the baseball team collapse at the end of its 2007 season. After CMU rattled off 16 consecutive Mid-American Conference wins, the team dropped eight of its next 13, including two MAC Tournament games. This prompted the senior outfielder to come into his final season determined to finish his collegiate career as a winner.

Team invites public to MAC practices

The gymnastics team is asking for help from the community to bring a Mid-American Conference Championship back to CMU next weekend. The team will host what it calls "MAC Meet Week." from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in Rose Arena room 150.
