"I felt like we out-wrestled the kid the entire match," Borrelli said. "We felt like we should have been awarded an escape early in the third period and then the kid just hung on and we just couldn't get a (stalling) call."
Brandon Sinnott and Gritter can become All-Americans Friday night with wins against Northern Iowa's Alex Dolly and Illinois' John Wise, respectively.
Senior Brandon Carter and junior Trevor Stewart successfully continued their march through the wrestlebacks Friday with two wins each.
Carter won both his matches in session three, the second of which was a pin of Missouri's Joshua Wagner. Carter will face Ohio State's Lance Palmer in session four with All-America honors at stake.
No. 9 seed 165-pounder Stewart continued to overcome an injured hand by winning decisions against Oklahoma States Jacob Dieffenbach and Liberty's Chad Porter. No. 6 seed Jonathan Reader of Iowa State awaits Stewart in the quarterfinal of the wrestlebacks, with the winner earning All-America honors.
The season ended for two CMU wrestlers Friday. Senior Luke Smith lost his second match of the weekend to Bloomsburg's Michael Sees, 13-4, ending his tournament and career.
After winning his first match of the day, sophomore 133-pounder Conor Beebe was eliminated from the tournament by Ohio State's Reece Humphrey.
Sophomore 157-pounder Steve Brown made a sold showing in his first NCAA Championships, but his weekend came to end after losing to West Virginia's Zac Fryling. A third-period takedown and three-point near fall proved to be the difference for Fryling.
