Dating event on Thursday

Issue date: 3/26/08 Section: Lifeline
Sophisticated Women of Color will host a "Speed Dating Extravaganza" at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Bovee University Center Down Under Food Court.
The event is free.
Co-founder and President of Sophisticated Women of Color Jennifer Frazier said that it is a different experience and does not make its participants self-conscious, unlike a date auction.
"You don't have to stand in front of a group of people, that makes you feel self-conscious," Frazier, a Detroit junior said. "It's an opportunity for singles to meet with other singles."
Participants in the speed-dating event will spend a few minutes at each table before moving to a new person and table.
The members of Sophisticated Women of Color want people to enjoy themselves and meet new people.
"I'm pretty sure the people participating will get a good laugh," said Detroit sophomore and SWC treasurer Natalie Hicks. "We want people to just relax and meet people they probably don't know."
The group is hosting the event as a prelude to their second annual Sophisticated Women of Color week that starts next Monday.
Sophisticated Women of Color was created about two years ago after Frazier and her friends couldn't find an organization they related to on campus.
The group is about women and empowering women and the community.
"We want people to know that we are not a sorority," Frazier said. "We're true to our word and we're trying to inspire the community."
Its members participate in different community service activities throughout the year such as helping at soup kitchens and mentoring high school students.
