Drunk driving accidents can affect anyone.

Mark Sterner is proof of that.

Sterner will speak to Central Michigan University students at 7 p.m. today in Plachta Auditorium about his experience with drunk driving.

Sterner was on his last spring break of college when he was in a drunk driving accident that killed three of five men in the car he was in. Sterner has the entire night of the accident on video and will show it to the CMU audience, said Brittany Laethem, Risk Management chair for the Panhellenic Council.

Panhellenic President Sara Seckel hopes the event will connect to students.

"It will be a very personal presentation," the Troy senior said. "It's not just facts - it's his true story."

The Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council and the Student Budget Allocation Committee is sponsoring the event.

To help get more people to come, the sponsors decided that whichever Greek organization has the highest percentage of its members in attendance will get $100 toward its respective philanthropy.

Seckel said events like these are important for the Panhellenic Council to put on.

"We're always interested in programs that will help students with risk management issues," she said.

Waterford freshman Melissa Campbell thinks it would be an interesting event to go to.

"I would think a story like this would be able to teach people the dangers of using alcohol irresponsibly," she said. "It would show people that drunk driving accidents can happen to anyone. Something like this might influence decisions people make later on in life."

Laethem also hopes people who see the presentation realize that these kinds of things can happen to anyone. She said she hopes Sterner's speech will make students think.

"He has a really powerful presentation," the Caro senior said.

Seckel wants people to be more responsible for their own actions.

"I hope people see through this presentation they can't take chances with the lives of their friends," she said. "It's really critical to be thinking clearly ahead of time when dealing with alcohol."

Seckel and Laethem both hope to fill Plachta Auditorium on Wednesday to spread more awareness about alcohol responsibility and drunk driving in particular.
