Action and adventure do not just happen on the silver screen.

Central Michigan University students will have the opportunity to go undercover Friday night to participate in "Mission: Impossible," a campus- and community-wide scavenger hunt.

Teams from residence halls across campus will meet at 8 p.m. in Real Food on Campus in Carey Hall to collect their packet of 500 questions and items to locate. The competition will begin at 9 p.m. with teams branching out in cars and on-foot to track down the desired information.

Each group will be given three hours to complete as much of the packet as possible and return their findings to a panel of judges. The packets will be reviewed and the team with the most accurate answers will be named champion.

Ryan Buck, a member of the event's planning committee, said questions may involve such things as the store hours of an area business or the price of a popular menu item. Facts about CMU's campus are fair game as well.

He expects about 400 people to participate.

"Mission: Impossible has been going on for three years, but this is the first year every residence hall on campus has a team," said Buck, an Ishpeming sophomore. "There should be a good turnout."

The event will be centered on a Disney theme. Each team is encouraged to pick their favorite Disney movie and come up with corresponding costumes to match.

"It's a lot of fun, and you get to learn lots about the community," said Bad Axe senior Elise Waun, a member of last year's planning committee.

"Plus, there is lots of free stuff, too."

Participants will have the chance to enjoy Papa John's pizza and pop while the judges are reviewing each group's findings. In addition, several prizes from the CMU Bookstore and local restaurants and businesses will be offered in a raffle.

The winning team will receive a prize valued at $200, and those following in second and third places will receive $100 and $50 prizes, respectively.

"It's really a good opportunity to get to know the campus and Mount Pleasant area," said Steve Whittico, a Livonia junior.

Those who wish to participate can sign up with their hall council or join a team with a friend who is living on campus. Registration is open until groups head out to begin the hunt on Friday evening.

There is no cost to sign up, but teams must be pre-registered with respective residence halls.
