Michalak finishes runner-up as wrestling takes seventh place at NCAA Championships

Wynn Michalak walked off the mat with his head down Saturday during the NCAA Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The senior had lost 7-2 to No. 2 seed Phil Davis of Penn State in the 197-pound championship match. Despite Michalak's disappointment, the Chippewas ended their best season in nearly a decade with a seventh place finish with 69 points.

A fitting farewell

Any number of matches could have put the wrestling team into a top-four spot at the NCAA Championships. There was senior Brandon Carter coming up short against Ohio State's Lance Palmer for an All-American spot at 149 pounds. There was junior 165-pounder Trevor Stewart falling just short of All-America honors as well, losing 5-1 to Iowa State's Jonathan Reader on a four-point move at the buzzer.

Home schedule begins today

The softball team will begin its home season at 2 p.m. today with a doubleheader against Valparaiso at the CMU Softball Complex. CMU has not taken the field since March 9 against Villanova in Clearwater, Fla., in a game it won 5-1. "We are all really excited to play again," said junior pitcher Ali Pettit.

Baseball hosts Oakland today

The baseball team had not lost a Mid-American Conference home opener since 2003 against Western Michigan. After two losses to Ohio to open its 2008 season, CMU beat the Bobcats 7-2 Monday to gain its first conference win. Before continuing MAC play, the Chippewas host Oakland at 3 p.

Bellore begins spring with new outlook

Nick Bellore has been through spring practice before. The soon-to-be sophomore linebacker enrolled last spring after graduating high school early and familiarized himself with the college game, all before his senior prom. It paid off. Bellore started every game for the Mid-American Conference champions and his 102 tackles ranked third on the team.

Reighard uses basketballs as distractions

CMU students have spent the week chanting "KE-NT" and "K-S-U" at gymnastics practices and when they were done, coach Jerry Reighard made sure to thank them. The gymnastics team has spent the week trying to simulate Saturday's Mid-American Conference Championship meet.
