"It's honestly just a big relief. There was so much pressure, and I wrestled really tight my first few matches," he said. "I had a lot of close matches because I was putting so much pressure on myself because it was my last year. I didn't want an opportunity like this to slip away. It's so satisfying to get the monkey off my back."
CMU had four other national qualifiers make the trip to St. Louis. Seniors Luke Smith (125 pounds), Brandon Carter (149 pounds), junior Trevor Stewart (165 pounds) and sophomore Steve Brown (157 pounds) all fell short of placing in the top eight and earning their first All-America honors.
Although Smith didn't accomplish all his goals at the NCAA tournament, Borrelli was proud of the way the two-time MAC champion battled.
"Luke was a fighter the whole time he was here," Borrelli said. "You could always count on Luke to go out there and give you good effort. He might not have always been the most skilled wrestler at 125, but he would fight hard, and that's all you can ask."
Seven seniors and four All-American winners will graduate.
