Human Race Machine lets individuals customize heritage

Some people suggest walking a mile in somebody else's shoes. But with the Human Race Machine, students have the ability to try on somebody else's skin. The machine, a graphic design project that lets participants view themselves with a different skin color, has been on campus throughout the week and will be available during dining hours today through Sunday in Real Food on Campus.

The search for a Central Michigan University College of Science and Technology dean is over. Ian Davison, an independent researcher and adjunct curator for the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, was chosen out of four main candidates to replace former dean Robert Kohrman, who retired in December.
Flynn pleads guilty to embezzlement

The family of Rob Flynn sat silent as the former City Clerk plead guilty to charges of embezzlement by a public official over $50. As City Clerk, Flynn was in charge of checks which paid for cemetery lots. He admitted in court that in Fall of 2007 he took one of those checks and "converted it to his own use" according to Flynn's attorney Gordon Bloem.
Fewer than 20 percent vote each year

Traditionally, only one in eight Central Michigan University students cast their vote for Student Government Association president. As of 10 p.m. Thursday, the trend holds true with 1,669 votes cast. SGA President Mike Zeig predicts between 2,000 and 3,000 votes will be cast this year.

Dennis Lennox II is campaigning for a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives. The Topinabee junior announced Tuesday he is running for the seat vacated by Rep. Kevin Elsenheimer, R-Bellaire, who is retiring in favor of running for the 4th District Court of Appeals.

Health insurance is a luxury that most college students cannot afford. Now they will not have to. The Michigan Rx Card Program, powered by a division of the United Networks of America, provides all Michigan residents the opportunity to have discounted prescriptions.
Music Building to get revamp by August

Central Michigan University's Music Building renovations are scheduled to be complete by August. Steve Lawrence, associate vice president of facilities management, said his department had asked for money to fund the project. The Board of Trustees approved $700,000 in early February to renovate the building.

Brittany Armstrong usually doesn't go out of her way to talk to unfamiliar guys. But her conservative nature quickly changed Thursday evening. Armstrong participated in a speed dating event in the Bovee University Center Down Under Food Court. She got the opportunity to start many new conversations in a matter of minutes.

Michele Repyak won Thursday's Honors Program Talent Show by singing about falling in love with a guy who worked at Starbucks. The performance, which won Repyak a $300 gift card to Meijer, drew laughter from the audience at Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium.

Powwows are more than a place for people to compete and trade. "It's a gathering place for people to socialize," said Colleen Green, interim director of Native American Programs. "It's a place to drum and dance." Central Michigan University's 19th annual Powwow and Hand Drum Contest will take place this Saturday and Sunday at Rose Arena.

Students had one hour to prepare their best food dishes Wednesday night in the Bovee University Center's Rotunda. An Iron Chef cooking competition helped kick off the Asian Heritage Month celebration at CMU. Several different foods, including vegetables, shitake mushrooms and cooking sauces, were placed on a table in the middle of the room where competitors, who were unaware of what ingredients they could use prior to the event, could get what they needed.

New recreation complex being built at Events Arena

Isabella County residents will have another choice for a workout location come next fall. Construction is underway on a new recreation complex named the Isabella Community Sportsplex, which is set for a September opening. Marc Sroufe, vice president of Mindwork Sports, said the construction is coming along as planned.

'The Mikado' brings opera to CMU today

The CMU School of Music is putting a modern twist on a classic opera hit. "The Mikado" is set in late 19th century Japan and involves love triangles, executions and lots of humor, said sophomore Thomas Walkenhorst, who plays the character Pish-Tush. "It's centered around a minstrel Nanki Poo who is actually the sun of the Mikado, the Emperor of Japan," Walkenhorst said.

The Livonia sophomore received a $500 cash prize in the Labelle Entrepreneurial Center's "Make a Pitch" competition Thursday in Grawn 100 for her web page-based custom handbag business idea.
