Woldt and Fabiano halls' cafeteria usually is a quiet place in the evening.

But Wednesday was not an average night.

Several tables were filled with Central Michigan University students challenging one another for prizes in a euchre tournament fundraiser supporting Threads 2008, an annual fashion show that showcases student work.

The tournament brought together some experienced and inexperienced euchre players.

"I've been playing euchre since middle school," said Jeff Heitz, a Macomb sophomore. "My friend's girlfriend will be participating in Threads, so I came out with him to support her and play a little."

The atmosphere amongst the playing tables varied from one to the next.

As some were still learning, laughter and smiles got them through the game, while the more intense players took regard to focusing on the cards in their hands.

"I don't know how to play euchre. That's why I came out," said Cameron McDonald, a Saginaw sophomore. "I wanted to participate in a fundraiser for the show and also wanted to learn how to play euchre."

McDonald will be feature several items he designed in the student, run fashion show that starts at 7 p.m. April 5 in Finch Fieldhouse.

Cedar Springs junior Liz Lipscomb and Kalamazoo senior Nathan Sage organized the card tournament.

"Overall, there was a fair turnout," Lipscomb said. "Some donated extra money outside of the $5 entry fee and that really helped."

The tournament raised $90, which will go toward the event. Twelve people competed in the tournament.

Undefeated players Chesterfield senior Colin Hanson and senior Mike Cowper received gift cards for winning.
