Rockford junior Angie Noorman said the machine provides a fresh perspective on racial diversity, emphasizing people's similarities rather than differences.

"If anything, it should just be an eye-opener to anyone," she said.

Noorman said, despite racial alterations, she still looked like herself.

Bridgette Wynn, a Southfield junior and Woldt Hall multicultural adviser, said she learned about the Human Race Machine one year ago, and drafted a proposal to bring it to CMU. Residence Life sponsored the event.

Wynn said the machine promotes an environment of diversity by emphasizing what people have in common, and how little that is tied to their race.

"I think it will offer seeing another perspective," she said. "This way people actually visualize it."

Wynn said her first time in the machine was shocking. As she cycled through the racial palette, she said she noticed different facial features, and the details that let her see "a little bit of everybody."

The machine is free, voluntary and does not require the time commitment of a lecture, and its relaxed presentation should draw students in ways other diversity programs might not, she said.

Odds are, students never will see the machine again, she said.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance, so utilize it," she said.
