Paul Pridgeon has been elected Student Government Association president alongside his running mate and vice president-elect Brad Sjoquist.

The online election ended at noon today, and the candidates were notified of the results shortly after.

Pridgeon, a Montgomery senior, and Sjoquist, a Kingsford junior, said they are excited to fill the position.

"I was really excited and happy," Sjoquist said. "Paul and I were in different locations when we found out but we talked and we are going to take it easy tonight and then sometime this week figure out what needs to be done."

The presidential votes totaled 1,722: Pridgeon and Sjoquist earned 1,067 votes and Andrew Verburg, Grandville senior, and Illinois sophomore Jamelle Dooley earned 605.

"I wish there would have been more votes total, that would have been nice," Pridgeon said.

Verburg said it was a good race and he had fun participating.

"I just hope the issues that Dooley and I brought up get a lot of face time," he said.

Pridgeon said since the organization is experiencing a turnover, the first thing the pair needs to do is fill open positions, such as empty senate seats, their executive board and committee chairs.

"There's many things I need to do, and Brad and I need to sit down and talk," Pridgeon said. "The organization's going to have a turnover so first positions need to be filled, and then we need to talk about what needs to be done this year and more long term."

The vote.cmich.edu Web site did experience a glitch and students were unable to vote this morning, said former SGA President Mike Zeig.

He said he is unsure how long the polls were down.

"Someone called Student Life this morning and wanted to vote, so that is when we were made aware of the issue," he said. "We tried to get it back up but it was too late to do anything."

Zeig said part of the problem is no one directly related to SGA has the technical expertise to fix a problem like the glitch at hand.
