Relationships changed my life

On March 28, 2007, a man asked me to be his girlfriend.

On March 28, 2008, I have been with that man for a year.

It's something I never thought would happen. In the past, I've been told I'm the "pants wearer" and have believed it for a long time. I always was the one to say what, where, when and why. But, people have a tendency to change.

I've changed in the last year more than I had ever expected. I was once a wild child running willy nilly around campus. But, now I'm in a committed relationship.

And whether or not anyone wants to admit how a relationship can or cannot change a person is up to them. But, I'm living proof it can be done with the right person.

I've learned to not care so much about myself and what I'm feeling, but to take into retrospect what the other may feel because of my actions.

I've learned not to be so demanding (I'm still working on that) and I've definitely learned that I can't always be right (sadly).  Most of all I've learned that a simple vocal, non text-messaged "sorry" can solve an unnecessary dispute.

My grandmother said something to me a while back. She said "college is the time to find a man you can marry." And she was right.

College has absolutely been the best time to explore options. And happily, I have found that person that I can see being with for a very long time.

In May, I will make the jump to Grand Rapids, living in an apartment with my boyfriend and together we will battle more stresses than we ever could have imagined. However, in my heart I feel it will all be worth it.

The ups and downs in a relationship will help you learn about one another and ultimately show you whether or not you're meant to be together. Whether it takes one week or one year, I wish you happiness and love.
