Sororities and fraternities will participate in various activities during this year's Greek Week.

CMU's 12 fraternities and 11 sororities have been paired up, including one triad, and will compete against each other throughout the week.

Each day during the week has a philanthropic theme.

"The point of being in a fraternity or sorority is basically philanthropy," said Amy Abel, a Waterford freshman and Sigma Sigma Sigma member. "Giving back to the community, working community service and giving what we earned to the community."

The first event is a barbecue at 4:30 p.m. today on Main Street between the Phi Kappa Tau and the Beta Theta Pi houses. During the barbecue, there will be a canned food drive, an eating competition and a cook-off.

A courting event took place March 12 and 13 and each fraternity and sorority had 10 minutes to sing to the other about Greek Week. The sororities and fraternities were paired together based on the rankings they received during the courting event.

Alpha Sigma Tau and Sigma Alpha Epsilon were paired together this year. President and Alpha Sigma Tau Chelsea Belote thinks the two organizations will do well this week.

"We have a lot of high energy and are working on having an amazing week together," the Rochester senior said.

The week's last event often is the most anticipated - the mock rock. The winners of Greek Week will be announced at the event, which takes place at 6 p.m. Friday in Rose Arena.

"I'm most looking forward to mock rock to see how creative the performers are," Abel said.

Though this Greek Week is just beginning, there already are some proposals for next year's Greek Week.

"We've tried for the past two years to get multicultural Greeks involved in Greek Week, but that couldn't happen because of budget issues," said Christina Kazmierski, a West Branch senior and Alpha Sigma Tau house manager. "Our goal for next year is to get all Greeks on campus involved in Greek Week."

The money raised during the 2008 Greek Week will go to a charity that has yet to be determined.

I've been wondering why Dance Marathon was taken out this year since it raises the most money for charity? Why take that out and put in more things that are competition?
If the whole basis of being greek is philanthropy then how are things like quiz bowls and mock rock supposed to raise money?
From what I've always seen, greek week usually causes bad blood between groups
