Most people love Catch Phrase.
Students will get the chance to compete in a Catch Phrase tournament at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Woldt Hall lobby. The tournament will help buy books for kids.
"It'll be a good time. I really hope people come out," said Jackie Kippen, a Warren junior. "This is a really fun way to raise money."
Kippen is a student in RPL 430: Recreational Programming, a class that teaches students how to organize and plan a charity event.
Anyone can show up and play. Pre-registeration isn't required, but the entry fee is $15 per team. Each team will consist of four students. About 15 to 20 teams are expected to compete.
Kathleen McIlmoyle, a Clarkston senior, and Zach DeCruydt, a Royal Oak junior, said their group was looking to do a game show, and Catch Phrase seemed like a good idea because it's popular and would be great for a tournament.
"It's exciting," McIlmoyle said. "I heard a lot of people will come, everybody likes Catch Phrase."
Another reason Catch Phrase was chosen is because it's easy and anyone can enjoy it.
"Catchphrase can be done quickly, you can do an entire tournament in one night," DeCrydt said. "It's not like monopoly which would take all night."
Each participant will receive a raffle ticket giving them the chance to win a variety of prizes, including Detroit Tigers tickets, restaurant tickets, T-shirts and an electronic Catch Phrase game. Local businesses helped donate prize money.
A lot of hard work and planning has gone into organizing this event.
"We contacted all different organizations to let us use their facilities," DeCruydt said. "I've been working really hard with getting refreshments and prizes together. I look forward to getting it all done."
Students in the RPL 430 class have been working on charity events since the beginning of February. Other events have included Spring Fling at the SAC, stand-up comedy shows and a billiard tournament.
The funds raised will be donated toward America Reads, a program designed to help kids learn to read.
