For baseball fans, the long wait is over - the season finally is here.
The Detroit Tigers open their season at 1:05 p.m. today at Comerica Park against the Kansas City Royals.
"I've been looking forward to baseball since February," said Troy sophomore Kyle Patru.
And the fans have high expectations.
"They need to get to the World Series," said Troy senior Matt Campbell.
He said he also wants to see the Tigers win the Central Division and the American League Championship.
Campbell is hoping Detroit comes through this year, as are many other Michiganders.
Fan craze
The early start time makes the game difficult for college students to watch. Many have class and will have to find other ways to watch it.
The die-hard fans may skip class to see it.
Patru has class during the game, but he said he might skip it to see the final few innings.
"I'm excited for the season and for playoffs," he said. "Playoffs are the most exciting time of the year."
Campbell also has class during the game, but is adamant about seeing it.
"I'll be trying to watch it online, or have my parents tape it for me," he said.
Base-bars
O'Kelly's Sports Bar and Grill, 2000 S. Mission St., will have a hot dog and beer special for the game, and will be giving away Tigers' merchandise throughout the day.
O'Kelly's owner John Hunter expects to have a lot of customers, even though the game is during the day.
"Quite a few die-hard Tigers fans will be there," Hunter said.
Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar, 1904 S. Mission St., will give away a framed picture of Justin Verlander during the game.
Assistant General Manager Keith Kellstrom expects the game to draw more business than usual.
"I don't think it will be huge business for us because it is during the day, but we'll probably be busier than normal," he said.
