Brad Sjoquist said he was excited and happy after finding out Friday he was elected Student Government Association vice president.
The Kingsford junior, along with president-elect and Montgomery senior Paul Pridgeon, tallied 1,067 votes last week compared with 605 for Grandville senior Andrew Verburg and Illinois sophomore Jamelle Dooley.
"Paul and I were in different locations when we found out," Sjoquist said. "But we talked ... then sometime this week, figure out what needs to be done."
The online election ended at noon Friday and the candidates were notified of the results shortly after.
"I wish there would have been more votes total - that would have been nice," Pridgeon said.
Verburg said it was a good race and he had fun participating.
"I just hope the issues that Dooley and I brought up get a lot of face time," he said.
Pridgeon and Sjoquist will take over leadership of the organization next Monday, when they are sworn in at the SGA meeting.
Pridgeon said since the organization is experiencing a turnover, the first thing the pair needs to do is fill open positions, such as empty Senate seats, their executive board and committee chairs.
"There's many things I need to do, and Brad and I need to sit down and talk," Pridgeon said. "The organization's going to have a turnover, so first positions need to be filled, and then we need to talk about what needs to be done this year and more long term."
The voting Web site did experience a glitch and students were unable to vote Friday morning, said SGA President Mike Zeig.
He said he is unsure how long the polls were down.
"Someone called Student Life this morning and wanted to vote, so that is when we were made aware of the issue," he said. "We tried to get it back up, but it was too late to do anything."
Zeig said part of the problem is no one directly related to SGA has the technical expertise to fix a problem like the glitch at hand.
