Several inches meant the difference between a sweep and a split Sunday for the CMU baseball team.
Buffalo's Adam Skonieczki placed a single past the outstretched glove of second baseman Brendan Emmett to give the Bulls a 4-3 win in the 10th inning and two-game sweep of the Chippewas.
The hit scored Nick Walczak from second base, who reached on a double.
Freshman infielder Brendan Emmett tried to make a play on it, but the ball rolled past him and Walczak scored from second to give Buffalo a 4-3 win in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader in Orlean, N.Y.
"It's a terrible way for a team to pick up a loss," said junior lefthander Dan Taylor.
The Chippewas were shut out in the first game, 1-0.
Taylor started the second game and lasted for eight innings, giving up two earned runs on ten hits. He also struck out six and walked none.
"I thought I controlled the game well," Taylor said. "I kept the pitch count down and kept the momentum on our side. I was trying to get in and out of the dugout as quick as possible."
Central took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior infielder Jeff Helps singled, moved to second on a ground ball and scored on senior outfielder Tyler Stovall's RBI single up the middle.
Buffalo came back in the third inning, when it scored two runs on a string of four hits off Taylor to take the lead.
Central regained the lead in the next inning when sophomore outfielder Tyler Kipke tripled to score freshman first baseman Casey Ingle, who reached on an error.
Kipke later scored on freshman infielder Rod Helsen's sacrifice fly to left field.
Buffalo added one more in the sixth inning to tie the game at three and sent the game into extra innings.
"We swung the bat well in the second game," said coach Steve Jaksa. "I thought we were better and thought we hit the ball well."
Jaksa also thought Taylor did a fine job on the mound and gave the team a chance to win.
