Sophomore Laura Rogers said she felt de la Garza could win the all-around title after she posted a 9.8 on the balance beam, Central's first event.

"I'm watching her compete at the meet and I'm watching her scores go up and I'm thinking 'I think she's got it' and it's just amazing to be freshman of the year and then win all-around," Rogers said. "I don't know how many freshmen have ever won the conference meet. It was amazing - I was proud of her."

Reighard was impressed particularly with the focus his team had on the balance beam, where it scored a 48.15. It was only the third time all season that CMU had broken the 48.0 plateau in the event.

"Kent State's first event was vaulting at the same rotation as when we were on balance beam. For example I told Cheryl Conlin I said 'you are first up on beam make sure your ready because when they land their vault their crowd is going to go nuts,'" Jerry Reighard said. "Sure enough they did and Cheryl was pretty much unfazed by that and that carried through for each of our balance beam workers."

Northern Illinois placed fourth with a score of 193.375, Western Michigan came in fifth with a 192.5, followed by Ball State (192.1) in sixth and Bowling Green finished last with a 192.025.
