Kari Seddon celebrated with her teammates Saturday as they rushed to the pitcher's circle after the last two outs were recorded with the bases loaded at the CMU Softball Complex.

The sophomore pitcher shut out Northern Illinois in the first game of the doubleheader and Central got a 2-0 win. Seddon was aided by stellar defense as CMU gained its first shut out of the season.

"Getting ahead in the count is a big thing that we discuss everyday in practice," Seddon said. "If I fall behind then it is an advantage to the hitter."

Seddon also one-hit Western Michigan Friday in CMU's 2-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader. She struck out 19 batters in the two games.

Seddon walked three batters in two innings of work Wednesday against Valparaiso. She spent the next days working on her control and finding a comfort zone.

"Wednesday (against Valparaiso) I didn't pitch so well," Seddon said. "So I was coming off of a tough game. Being able to pitch so well was a real confidence booster."

Central opened Friday's series with a 3-1 loss to the Broncos. Seddon said she felt it was her responsibility to help the Chippewas rebound in the second game and avoid being swept by their top rival.

"Western is a big rival so I took it upon myself and knew that I had to be on my game if we were going to win," Seddon said. "But I knew also that my team was there on defense and with the bats."

Seddon improved to 4-6 on the season after picking up two wins during the weekend. She helped her cause by driving in the first run for the Chippewas against NIU. Her 53 strikeouts rank in the top 10 of the Mid-American Conference.

"The last half of the game Seddon pitched extremly well," said coach Margo Jonker. "Offensively, she helped us out a lot."
