They can make you look sophisticated, mysterious, playful and intelligent.
You can wear them side-swept or straight down, longer or shorter.
It really depends on your style, but lately it is all about bangs.
"I do see a lot more people with bangs," said Rachel Brock of Color Works Hair Company, 1639 E. Broomfield Road. "I don't know if it's the season or not. It may just be one of the styles."
A trend exploded in American culture after Reese Witherspoon's debut of her "without husband" hair-do at the 2007 Golden Globes. Witherspoon's daring trend on the carpet was adored and praised by the media (think People Magazine's Best and Worst hair list for 2007) and brought an elementary school style some sophistication and sexiness. That boldness, brought on this new hairstyle, no longer limited to the kids you baby-sit.
"The ones straight in your face make me think of grade school, where your parents decided how you look," said Grosse Ile senior Alanna Logan.
They wear well with long or short hair, and help update your look without losing length or an already loved style, some said.
"I had them in middle school and hated them," said Bangor sophomore Tracey Letten. "I had my hair cut short and thought bangs with short hair was cute, so I tried it."
Perhaps one may be a little hesitant about taking the plunge with the scissors, or you still believe bangs make you look like a little kid. Actresses Mischa Barton and Alexis Bledel have sported the full forehead of bangs, while celebrities like Mandy Moore, Cameron Diaz and Nicole Richie have sported the more side-swept look.
Brock said many of Color Works customers come in with a photo of a celebrity and ask for bangs cut just like the photo.
So if you have a fear of cutting them yourself, find a photo and take it in. Best bet is to try Google image search. Many sites like Cosmopolitan (cosmopolitan.com), Seventeen.com or Hairstyle.com feature a virtual hair salon. Upload a picture of yourself and try different hair-dos without the consequences of a real pair of shears.
Be bold, make a statement.
Or just try something cute.
