Baroda senior Anne Marie Hartman doesn't get cold feet speaking in public.

"I get a real thrill speaking in front of crowds," Hartman said. "It's what I've always wanted to do since I was a little kid."

Baroda took home seven awards at this year's Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League State Championship as part of Central Michigan University's speech and debate team.

The team competed at both the MISL State Championship and the Pi Kappa Delta National Championship during spring break. CMU placed second in the state competition and fifth at Pi Kappa Delta's championship as a team.

"We prepare speeches in 12 different events that last from eight to 10 minutes long," said Edward Hinck, director of forensics and head coach of the team.

The squad participates in many events, ranging from interpretive events and debate to "After Dinner Speaking," which involves taking a socially-relevant issue and discussing it in a humorous way.

Their regular season runs from late September to February and they usually attend between 18 and 20 tournaments, as well as post-season tournaments.

Hartman was a standout at the state championship, winning first place in the persuasion category and claiming numerous other awards. She will represent the state of Michigan in the Interstate Oratory National Competition at the end of April.

Hartman had to learn how to best balance school, work and the team and after three years on the team, it has paid off.

Anyone can join the speech and debate team, a speech major or previous experience isn't necessary. However, it can certainly benefit any future career path.

Hartman said the public speaking skills emphasized on this team would be helpful in any aspect.
