Supporters of local talent packed into The Cabin, 930 W. Broomfield Road for the sixth annual PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) "Battle at the 'Bin"on Tuesday.
Carrollton sophomore Mike Myczkowiak, who won the event, said the simplicity of his acoustic guitar helped him win.
"There's just something to it," he said. "You don't need a band or a drummer or anything to make it sound good."
Myczkowiak played and sang recognizable tunes such as Sublime's "What I got", Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy" and Jack Johnson's "Posters." Myczkowiak had never played in front of such a large crowd, but he was only nervous for the first song, he said.
Myczkowiak's brother, Andrew, a Carrollton senior, was also competing and was last year's winner. While his brother showed him a few things on the guitar, Mike Myczkowiak learned much of his skills from tabs, and even more from his own listening and reproducing of sounds.
Six performers, including the Myczkowiak brothers battled it out in front of a fairly large crowd, which was to be expected seeing as the fund-raiser usually has an excellent turnout.
Last year's event reached capacity, according to PRSSA treasurer Christine Kunde of Fowlerville.
The Cabin had specials on pizza, drawing even more people in.
Bins with each performer's name on them were passed around during the show to collect money for the organization, and also to determine who would be the winner of the competition. PRSSA members were also selling an arms length of raffle tickets for $3. The winners were drawn throughout the night.
Prizes included certificates to B-tan, Cottage Inn, and lunch for two at The Brass Café, according to Kevin Thiel, Farmington Hills junior and first year PRSSA member. $50 cash was reserved for the winner.
The money raised at "Battle at the Bin" helps the organization out tremendously.
"It helps with day-to-day operations, and helps give members more professional development opportunities," Kunde said. "We hope to make somewhere around $500 from this event."
PRSSA continues to grow every year and currently has around 80-100 members.

I wrote this article, but there appears to be some editing mistakes. It was not really for charity, as the headline says, but to raise money for PRSSA. (Continued…)
