Abbott stresses determination

After that, Abbott played with a variety of teams for smaller organizations, having 150 teammates over the course of one summer.

He thought his career might be over, but then had one of the proudest moments of his life in 1998 when he got back with the Chicago White Sox.

"One of the biggest factors is trust," Abbott said. "Trust is in the execution. It's about knowing what you do best. It's knowing that when the world speeds up, you can rely on trusting yourself without fear or anxiousness taking over. Trust separates good from great."

Abbott has seen a lot of success and never gave up on himself.

"Having one hand has showed me that life isn't always easy or fair, but you need to make the most of what you can do. Incredible things can happen if you believe in yourself," he said.

Ann Arbor freshman Anson Kairys said she loved Abbott's speech.

"I might not be a professional one-handed pitcher, but you can really relate to the things he said," she said.
