Taylor's second trial

The second day of the retrial of Orange Taylor III began Tuesday, according to The Echo.

Taylor has been accused of raping and killing former Eastern Michigan University student Laura Dickinson.

County Assistant Prosecutor Blain Longsworth focused the trial on the evidence found on Dickinson and the way she was found in her room.

Acrylic fibers found on Dickinson matched the fibers of a sweatshirt of Taylor's.

Public Assistant Defender Laura Graham argued the possibility of misinterpretation in regards to the evidence.

The defense addressed that aside from the bed, the room was undisturbed.

Graham said the allegations against Taylor were an injustice.

"This is not a case about every woman's nightmare," she said. "It is a case about every citizen's nightmare, being accused of some terrible crime you didn't commit."

Graham encouraged the jury to look at all the missing evidence.

MSU hosts environment speakers

Michigan State University will be hosting two world-renowned leaders in health and the environment May 2, according to The State News.

Gro Harlem Brundtland, a former prime minister of Norway and director-general of the World Health Organization, will be speaking to all undergraduates.

Peter Raven, Missouri Botanical Garden director, will be addressing students graduating with advanced degrees.

"(Raven) was described by Time magazine as a hero for the planet because he champions research around the world to protect endangered plants and animals," said Peggy Lents, senior vice president for communications for the Missouri Botanical Garden.

MSU has recently taken several environmental actions.

In 2007, MSU joined the Chicago Climate Exchange in order to reduce gas omissions.

In 2009, a $13.3 million recycling center is projected to be complete.

"It's great they're spreading environmentalism into the commencement speeches," Thomas said. "With the recycling plant, Eco has been working for more than a few years to get MSU to do more comprehensive recycling," said physiology junior Corrinne Thomas, co-president of student environmental group Eco.

Man with gun runs from police

A vehicle with five men was searched after officers suspected the driver was under the influence, according to The Grand Valley Lanthorn.

The driver was arrested for a blood alcohol level above the legal limit and possession of marijuana.

Ammunition was found in the vehicle and the passengers were searched.

Pavanne Benne, 35, fled the scene.

Benne dropped a loaded .38-caliber revolver before being taken into custody.

Capt. Brandon DeHaan, assistant director of GVSU's Department of Public Safety, said Benne has been charged with resisting and obstructing arrest and carrying a concealed weapon.
