Defense will be key this weekend for the Central Michigan women's club lacrosse team.
With a four-team, all-day tournament and only four reserves, Central looks to keep scores low Sunday in its three games in Chicago. CMU will play Xavier, the University of Chicago and Davenport University.
"Possession is the name of the game," said assistant coach Nate Mueller.
Central will look to slow down the game and let its strong defense win the game for them.
With a defense anchored by senior Brittani Kokko on one side and captain Audrey Christy on the other, it has been tough for other teams to score goals on Central.
"(We) know that everyone has each other's back," Kokko said.
Central has held its opponent under three goals in three out of seven games this season.
"If we win 1-0, it's still a W," Mueller said.
Central's opponents feature strong offensive games, said junior defensive wing Audrey Christy.
"Xavier is supposed to be good," Christy said.
Xavier (3-1) looks to be the top competition for Central (4-3). The University of Chicago, the hosts of the tournament, are 0-2, while Davenport University is 1-2.
Central is looking to gain some momentum for the playoffs with eight games remaining in the regular season. CMU has won two of its last three games, including a double-overtime win over Western Michigan.
This is Central's first year competing in Division A of the Women's Collegiate Lacrosse League. CMU won the championship two years ago in 2006 and was the runner-up last year in Division B.
