Although national Domestic Violence Awareness Month is in October, CMU is getting a head start.

In an effort to gather public attention to the issue of domestic violence, Advocacy Central is sponsoring a full week of events dubbed the Domestic Abuse Awareness Week.

Activities will kick off at 9 a.m. today at the Volunteer Center with the Clothesline Project. Students will be able to give an imaginative statement to support domestic violence victims.

"They can come to the Volunteer Center ... decorate a shirt for a victim of domestic abuse," said Portia McIntosh, a Southfield junior and event coordinator.

There will be different colored T-shirts to be painted and decorated by students, each color representing a specific form of domestic abuse.

"Red, pink and orange are for victims of rape and sexual assault," McIntosh said. "Yellow and brown represent battering and assault ... green and blue represent incest (and) child abuse." she said.

The event will continue throughout the week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day through Friday.

"We're going to hang the shirts up in the Volunteer Center," said McIntosh. "(The Clothesline Project) is an artistic expression of testimonies from survivors of domestic abuse."

According to the Centers for Disease Control's 2000 study, more than 32 million Americans are affected by domestic violence.

"Obviously it's an important issue, and something we should all be aware of," said Ross Rapaport, Counseling Center director.

The events of Domestic Abuse Awareness Week are not limited to the Clothesline Project.

A domestic abuse panel discussion will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the UC Auditorium.

The Take Back the Night rally and march will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, opening with a speech that will discuss human trafficking at the UC Auditorium. The march will start at 7:30 p.m.

"The public needs to be more aware of (domestic violence)," said Lindsey Haley, a Berkley senior. "It's good to make the public aware throughout the year," Haley said.
