Dancers, lip synchers and crossdressers filled Rose Arena on Friday night.

This year's Greek week concluded Friday with the annual Mock Rock performance.

Eleven groups, made up of pairs of fraternities and sororities, competed in fun events and raised money for various charities.

"Greek Week is just one great example of where lifelong friendships are developed and wonderful memories are created," said Tom Idema, assistant director of Student Life.

Mock Rock is a song and dance challenge put on by the 11 fraternity/sorority teams and the final factor in determining the overall winner of Greek Week.

"Each team had a word; ours was 'walk,'" said Brittany Brown, Berkley junior and member of sorority Phi Mu. "We have about 10 songs, and each must pertain to that word."

Each team was allowed one king-sized white sheet as a backdrop for its performance, and props had to fit in a box.

"Each group gets 10 minutes, and you could get points deducted; there are a lot of specifics," said Chris Patterson, Comstock Park sophomore and member of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Each team donned costumes fitting its theme as members performed routines to songs ranging from "Summer Loving," from the musical "Grease," to DJ Unk's "Walk it Out."

Patterson said Mock Rock is an important part of Greek Week and a lot of time goes into preparation.

"I lost a lot of sleep," he said.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Sigma Tau finished second in the mock rock, and won the overall competition for the week.

Katy Caudell, Charlotte senior and member of Alpha Sigma Tau, was ecstatic about the results.

"We practiced for hours the whole week," she said. "We're just so excited; we really wanted to win."

Tri Sigma and Sigma Chi won Mock Rock, with Sigma Alpha Epsilon in second and Phi Sigma Phi and Zeta Tau Alpha in third.

The Greek Games is not only about competition, but about supporting the community. Overall, between $14,000 and $15,000 was raised this year, said Amy Abel, Waterford freshman and co-chair of Greek Week.

"The money will be split up equally between four or five charities, such as the Special Olympics charity and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization," she said.
