Models flaunt student-made clothing

Her line consisted of four models including herself, displaying swimwear made out of bottle tabs.
"I pictured the future with global warming and how everything would have to be recycled," Harris said. "I decided to do swimwear but make it a little different. Swimsuits today are really skimpy so I wanted them to look more retro."
Harris said fashion is an important industry that touches everyone in some way.
Each design line was viewed and judged by a panel of apparel merchandising and design professors to compete for awards.
Mitzi Cook, assistant professor of human environmental studies, has judged numerous high schools, and university fashion shows, but said Threads stands out from the typical fashion show.
"Threads is an inclusive community of designers that include sophomores to seniors," Cook said. "I think some of these designers could definitely go far in their future careers."
Divine design
Judges were looking for line cohesiveness, runway presence and innovation.
Nathan Sage, assistant producer and design student, took the top award, Designer of the Year by the Fashion Association of Merchandising and Design.
"I can't even put into words alone how much time I've put into producing this show," said Sage, a Kalamazoo senior.
Gibbons said Threads is an important asset for the university to have.
"The fashion department is so small here, but this production is so huge that it allows us to showcase what we're capable of."
