CMU finished with seven extra-base hits Sunday to take two of three during the weekend in Bowling Green, Ohio. The team raised its record to 11-16 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference.
"Today, from start to finish, we played very well," said coach Steve Jaksa. "I thought we swung the bat well. We didn't give away any at-bats. I was very pleased with our offense."
Central started its run production quickly when senior shortstop Jeff Helps doubled to lead off the game. Helps later scored on freshman second baseman Brendan Emmett's RBI double to right-center field.
The Chippewas scored in every inning except for the sixth and ninth.
Left fielder Billy Anderson led CMU with three hits, one run and two RBIs.
Junior left-hander Steve Teno pitched 5 2/3 innings and kept CMU in the game. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits and also struck out four and walked three.
Junior right-hander Chris Kupillas finished the game. He surrendered only two hits and secured the win in the ninth after putting the lead-off batter on base.
"They played hard," Jaksa said. "It was good to go down to their place and grab two out of three. We have the momentum, now we have to continue to play that kind of baseball."
Saturday Splitter
On Saturday, CMU split a doubleheader with Bowling Green after Friday's scheduled game was moved because of wet field conditions. The Falcons won the opener 10-3.
Both teams had 11 hits, but CMU was hindered by its four errors and lack of hits with runners in scoring position.
"I saw a few mistakes in that game that we don't normally do," Jaksa said.
Central took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior right fielder Tyler Stovall doubled in Emmett. Bowling Green added two in the second after senior right-hander Eric Lawrence hit the first batter, surrendered a single and balked - which gave BGSU a run.
