A weekend dedicated to… Theatrical Stage Makeup
Issue date: 4/9/08 Section: Lifeline
Lifeline dedicates weekend entertainment to movie characters whose personality relies on detailed stage makeup.
"Mrs. Doubtfire" (1993)
After a bitter divorce, Robin Williams disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend secret time with his children held in custody by his Ex. The make-up for the character "Mrs. Doubtfire" took about 4 1/2 hours to apply each day.
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984)
In the dreams of his victims, a child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him. It is possible to buy Freddy Kreuger makeup kits to replicate the nightmare maker's look from the movie.
"How The Grinch Stole Christmas" (2000)
When he was rejected as a child, the Grinch takes revenge to steal Christmas from Whoville with the help of his dog, Max. Approximately 8,000 makeup appliances were used during and an average of 45 makeup artists used on the busiest days of production.
"Planet of the Apes" (1968)
An astronaut crew crash lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved. John Chambers' makeup technique pioneered in the film was based upon one technique he had used during World War II to give disfigured veterans a normal appearance.
"The Nutty Professor" (1996)
Grossly overweight Prof. Sherman Klump, desperate to lose weight, takes a special chemical that turns him into the slim, but obnoxious Buddy Love. With the help of Academy Award-winning makeup wizard Rick Baker, Eddie Murphy magically disappears into multiple roles.
"The Goonies" (1985)
A group of kids embark on a wild adventure after finding a pirate treasure map. The character Sloth's makeup consisted of 15 overlapping sections. Foam latex was sculpted around a mechanical headpiece that allowed Sloth's droopy eye and dumbo ears to move via radio controls.
