A university's reputation can be distinguished by many different aspects - whether it's academics, faculty, athletics, or campus life. If judged by the amount being paid to its highest-salaried employees, Central Michigan University uses athletics to gain national recognition.

Turnover hits English Department

Central Michigan University's English department is losing seven members of its faculty. The number represents 22 percent of its tenured and tenure track faculty members. For Heidi Holder, the decision to leave her tenured position in the department was in the best interest of her family.

Finance and Law professor Nancy White has announced her candidacy for state representative for Isabella and Midland counties in the Nov. 4 elections. White, a Democrat, is running against current District 99 representative Bill Caul, a Republican. Both candidates are running uncontested in their respective primaries.

CMU welcomes Special Olympics

About 1,500 volunteers and 2,700 athletes will come together for this summer's Michigan Special Olympics. Opening Ceremonies take place Thursday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, followed by a carnival in the Rose Pond Area. Competition starts Friday and concludes on Saturday.

City Commission changes phone provider

Winn Telecom to replace Verizon

The Mount Pleasant City Commission passed a motion Tuesday to switch the city's phone service from Verizon to Winn Telecom, which could potentially save taxpayers several thousand dollars. Winn Telecom has also agreed that in addition to switching services, it will install a fiber-optic cable at a $21,000 savings when the Mount Pleasant Municipal offices move into the Borden Building later this year.

Memorial Day parade remembers veterans

John and Tammy Morris watched their daughter Johnny pass with trombone in hand as Dixie, their 90-pound boxer, sat alongside. It was just one scene from Monday's annual Memorial Day Parade in downtown Mount Pleasant. Johnny marched as a member of the Mount Pleasant High School marching band.

Tips to combat expensive study abroad

The state of the economy in the United States is leading to higher study abroad costs, according to a report from USA Today. Central Michigan University Study Abroad advisor Amber Schneider said about 450 students participated in CMU's program during the 2007-2008 academic year, and there are many ways to diffuse the costs.

Alumna Martin first woman selected to head Eastern Michigan University

Sue Martin left the campus of Central Michigan University in 1971 with a bachelor's degree. More than 35 years later, she enters another Michigan university as president. Martin was announced as Eastern Michigan University's first female president on May 14.

Access Adventure Trail to extend barrier-free trail system and parks

Mount Pleasant Parks and Recreation plans to construct a universally accessible trail through Chipp-A-Waters Park and establish a permanently endowed fund with the Mount Pleasant Area Community Foundation. Parks and Recreation will extend the current river walk trail, which currently connects five major parks with a three-mile, barrier-free trail system.

Wireless Internet project on track for July completion

The campus' wireless project continues on schedule and is expected to reach its completion goal of July 2008. The $1.9 million endeavor was approved by Central Michigan University's Board of Trustees in early 2007. It's goal was to provide wireless Internet access across administrative offices, academic buildings and residence halls.

College of Business offers classes with more intimate setting

This is the first part of an ongoing summer series that explores the activity of campus departments. Small summer class sizes help create a more relaxed atmosphere for students and faculty in the College of Business Administration. Management Chairperson Kevin Love said one of the things he enjoys about teaching a summer class is the relationship he builds with students.
