No charges filed after noose investigation

Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick has decided not to press charges of ethnic intimidation relative to the hanging of four nooses in a Central Michigan University classroom last November. A 28-year-old male engineering student was thoroughly questioned and a formal investigation was conducted to determine whether the act was racially-motivated.

A state department is reviewing a complaint filed by Central Michigan University against an investigative agency acting on behalf of the Recording Industry Association of America. Privacy concerns prompted the university in July to file a complaint against MediaSentry, which has been accused of gathering computer forensic data and evidence over peer-to-peer online networks for civil suits without a license to do so in Michigan.

Several obscenities were painted on buildings early Wednesday morning in the Campus Court strip mall on Mission Street. The anti-military messages were directed toward the Army Recruiting Office, 1600 S. Mission St. Phrases and words such as "change" and "Army sucks," as well as other more vulgar obsceneties, were spray painted along the sides and windows of the office.
Excavation company demolishes Pizza King building

Excavation workers began demolition this morning at the corner of Preston and Mission streets where Pizza King was set ablaze last September. Workers began taking the building down around 7 a.m. after some scrap metal was removed last night, said Wes Wiggins, who was taking the metal. He said the excavating company gave him permission, and he was scrapping it for money.

Despite country-wide closures after its corporate parent filed for bankruptcy suddenly on Tuesday, Mount Pleasant's Bennigan's Grill & Tavern won't be affected - at least for the short term. Metromedia Restaurant Group, owner of Bennigan's and Steak & Ale Restaurant, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in the Eastern District of Texas.

Botanical gardens to feature hundreds of plant species

More than 400 plant species will come together starting in September as the construction for Central Michigan University's own botanical gardens gets underway. CMU trustee emeritus James Fabiano Sr. approached CMU's biology department about two years ago and said he wanted to make a starting contribution for the startup of a botanical garden.

Classes to incorporate city trail

Lynn Dominguez's students can look forward to being outdoors in the fall. The assistant professor for Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services said she is incorporating the development of the Access Adventure Trail into two of her classes. The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees approved a temporary easement on July 17 for the city of Mount Pleasant to complete construction on the trail into university-owned Veits Woods.

"I think most of the students at Central have integrity and don't cheat, but the ones who do are going to pay for it," he said.
