The Mount Pleasant Planning Commission voted unanimously Thursday to reject site plans for a Hooters restaurant at the proposed location of 1329 S. Mission St. "The site plan does not protect the neighborhood, regardless of whether Hooters is good or bad (for the community)," said Jeff Smith, a Planning Commission member.

Raymond Demetrius Jones, 23, pleaded no contest to assault with intent to murder on behalf of a plea agreement reached Thursday in the Isabella County Courthouse, 200 N. Main St. In the agreement, charges of armed robbery and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder were dropped, and Jones pleaded no contest to his involvement in the New Year's Day beating of James Ronald Williams outside of O'Kelly's Sports Bar & Grill, 2000 S.

Maced tailgater out of jail on $2,000 bail

Tyrone Calvin Graham-Jones was released Thursday morning from the Isabella County Jail on $2,000 bail, after a non-running preliminary examination. Graham-Jones had been in police custody since he was arrested around 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28 in parking lot 63 during tailgating at the football game against Eastern Illinois.
SGA seeks name for student section

The Student Government Association and Athletics Department are teaming up to give the stadium's student section its own name by the football team's next home game Sept. 27 against University of Buffalo. SGA is accepting name suggestions for the section. The student with the winning suggestion will receive at $75 gift certificate to the CMU Bookstore.

The more than four-month construction project from business route US-127 to Broomfield Road along Isabella Road is nearing completion. "This is the last phase," said Pat Gaffney, Isabella County Road Commission engineer. The mile-and-a-half project was proposed to be completed before classes started in mid-August, but the contracted company, CL Trucking & Excavating, LLC, has had some delays.

Wheatland Music Festival takes place this weekend

Impromptu jam sessions, dancing and camping bring patrons to the 35th annual Wheatland Music Festival. The weekend event begins today and will host 15 different musical groups, including "The Freight Hoppers," "Slide" and "Tim Graves and Cherokee." The event at the intersection of Pierce Road and 50th Avenue in Remus is expected to bring in 10,000 patrons, according to organizers.

The weekend program will allow residents to swap unwanted items with other members of the community by placing them on the curb side. Interested participants are encouraged to place their unwanted items at the curb outside their residence late Friday evening or early Saturday morning.
