No longer the youngest

I have recently given up my rights to be considered the youngest of three and the only girl in my family. While many students were sleeping in from a long night Aug. 29, I was standing at 8:30 a.m. in front of a "Welcome to America, Josie" sign at an airport in Grand Rapids.

Giving front-page headlines to a publicity-starved CMU student who claims discrimination by the Speak Up, Speak Out committee is utterly ridiculous. Why does CM Life continue to publish the increasingly irrelevant antics of a student who has no respect for the contributions of those in the university who are not in lockstep with his personal views? Many of us know of the tireless efforts of Merlyn Mowrey, who with her committee is trying to stimulate intellectual discourse on campus.

Officers too quickly used force against tailgater
The recent arrest of Tyrone Graham-Jones is an example of a poorly managed situation that quickly escalated out of control. Graham-Jones, who is now out on bail and is charged with disrupting the peace and resisting and obstructing an officer, was acting in self-defense after a group of rowdy tailgaters in the way of his car began harassing him, according to numerous witnesses.

Health benefits extended for same-sex domestic partners
The Central Michigan University administration decided to extend health benefits for same-sex domestic partners. The benefits policy, which begins Oct. 1, is a broader policy that covers eligible CMU employees who "carry the burden of responsibility for" a person, who is not "recognized in any other setting.
