Brunner powers CMU to 3-0 in the MAC; team awaits WMU

Coach Butch Jones told his players Friday that someone who does not play regularly would have to "answer the call" Saturday against Temple. Quarterback Brian Brunner was one of those players - and he embraced his opportunity. The senior backup, who took over for an injured Dan LeFevour, threw his first touchdown pass since 2006 and led the football team to a 24-14 Homecoming win in front of 22,114 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

The backup quarterback, shortly after he took over for an injured Dan LeFevour and led CMU to a 24-14 Homecoming win against Temple, went with the team to celebrate with the student section - a typical winning tradition at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

It didn't take long for the turnover generation Butch Jones emphasized this week to materialize during Saturday's game. After forcing just six forced turnovers in its first five games, the CMU defense almost matched that with four in Saturday's 24-14 win against Temple at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

1. Ample Backup Fifth-year senior quarterback Brian Brunner entered the game on CMU's final drive in the first half and closed the game for the Chippewas. Brunner led the team on a field goal drive to close the half and threw a touchdown in the fourth quarter, his first since November 2006.

Early goals helped the field hockey team snap its five-game losing streak and come away with two big wins this weekend against Miami and Ball State. CMU held off a late game rally to defeat the RedHawks 3-2 on Friday. The team then traveled to Indiana to face the Cardinals less than 24 hours later.

The volleyball team fought history Saturday - and won. CMU (11-7 overall, 5-1 Mid-American Conference) dominated the first two sets of its match at Kent State en route to its first win against the Golden Flashes in seven years. CMU easily won the first two games, 25-23 and 25-14, and took three of four.
Soccer still unbeaten in MAC

The women's soccer team remains unbeaten in the Mid-American Conference after a win and a tie on the road last weekend. CMU added another MAC win Friday against Kent State, 4-1, butt managed a tie, 2-2, against Buffalo on Sunday. Central (10-2, 5-0 MAC) remains at the top of the MAC standings as the only team yet to lose a conference game.
Subs help women finish third

Leaving its top 10 runners at home, the women's cross country teamplaced third out of five teams at the Kensington Metropark on Friday for the Michigan Intercollegiates meet. Leading the way for the Chippewas was sophomore Kelly Kobylczyk, running the course in 20 minutes, 8 seconds and placing seventh.

Toledo 13, Michigan 10 Toledo stunned Michigan as U-M kicker K.C. Lopata missed a 26-yard field goal with four seconds remaining at Michigan Stadium. The Rockets used a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter and went ahead on a 48-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to drop the Wolverines to 2-4 this season.
