(04/21/14 9:23pm)

It was business as usual for CMU track and field. The Chippewas split up this weekend, sending some of the team to Ohio State for the Jesse Owens Track Classic and others to the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University. Saturday at Ohio State, the Chippewas raked in some solid performances. Five athletes scored top eight place performances in their respective races. Senior Shawntoreah Turk snagged first in the women’s 400m dash, finishing in 54.20. In the 400 hurdles, Scott Parker placed second, and senior Kyle Smith grabbed second in the javelin. Junior Bridget Doughty and junior Emma Fishnick placed third and eighth in the women’s 400m hurdles, respectively. At Grand Valley, which was also held on Saturday, the men placed second overall and the women took eighth. GVSU swept the overall title on both the men’s and women’s sides. Junior Diamond Hamilton placed first in the women's 100m dash, finishing in 12.01 seconds. Other women top finishers include sophomore Alexandra Mielke, who finished second in the 400, senior Kelsey Ritter, third in the 200, and a duo of seniors Samantha Stein and Megan Heffner, who were fourth and eighth in the high jump. For the men, both sophomore Anderson Lee in 800m run, and sophomore Craig Mauldin in the triple jump were able to win their events. Redshirt freshman Melvin Harris placed second in the high jump, and the relay team of freshman Nicholas Malliaras, freshman Brad Parsons, junior Curt Mitchell and freshman Malik Peacock combined for second in the 400 relay. The team will pick up where they left off next weekend, traveling out to San Diego California for the Triton Invitational.
